Who is in each group?
On this site, three tools come inside wider platforms: Tenable ASM inside Tenable One, Cortex Xpanse inside the Palo Alto Networks Cortex portfolio, and Rapid7 Surface Command inside the Rapid7 Command platform. Microsoft Defender EASM is an Azure resource. The specialists are IONIX, CyCognito, watchTowr, Hadrian and Censys ASM, which sell ASM and validation as their main product.
Where do the suites lead?
Stack fit. Tenable ASM and Cortex Xpanse hold the top score on our stack criterion: external findings land beside Tenable's vulnerability data in Tenable One, and Xpanse ties natively into Cortex XSOAR and Prisma Cloud. Rapid7 Surface Command sits beside Exposure Command, InsightVM and InsightCloudSec. If you already own the suite, the ASM module arrives with your existing workflows, users and contracts.
Cortex Xpanse also documents containment through Active Response playbooks, which is the strongest containment among the suites here.
Where do the specialists lead?
Proof, containment and the fix loop.
- Proof: watchTowr, CyCognito and Hadrian document attack-style testing and score 9; IONIX documents non-intrusive exploit simulations and scores 8. The suites' ASM products do not document exploit testing on the pages reviewed.
- Containment: IONIX documents WAF virtual patching and reclaiming hijackable assets; watchTowr documents edge rules through seven vendors.
- Fix loop: CyCognito and Hadrian document a retest after the fix, and IONIX's homepage states instant re-validation of remediated items.
What does the trade-off look like in practice?
A suite customer gets a broader exposure view and fewer integrations to build, and gives up documented proof and, in most cases, containment. A specialist customer gets more of the steps that turn a list into a fix, and takes on another vendor and another integration. Several specialists name the suites' tools among their integrations: IONIX names Cortex XSOAR and Prisma Cloud, and Censys names Tenable VM. Running a specialist beside a suite is common.
How to decide
- List the stations your current tools already cover. If a SOAR platform already runs your playbooks, containment through playbooks may be solved.
- Find your weakest station. For most teams it is proof or the retest.
- Weight the criteria accordingly in the exposure triage calculator and see which group rises.
